What You Should Know First Before Buying a Desk Lamp
In days gone by, the desk lamp used to be an accessory with either a goose neck or foldable arms to which were fitted a lamp holder housing with a simple filament bulb. Today the scenario is different. Lighting experts and engineers have developed various types of modern desk lamps that are not only aesthetic but also highly functional. Modern technology has given rise to versatility in the range of lamps. In addition to the filament bulb, one can choose from a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), a halogen bulb and the latest light emitting diode (LED) lamps fitted in various types of desk lamps ranging from stylized and sleek modern types to retro and antique look fixtures. Some lighting fixtures have extreme versatility and it may be possible to angle the light head in any direction and even adjust the beam from a spotlight to a diffuse source.
While selecting desk lamps one would normally keep a few points in mind. These are given below.
1. The first one is the brightness of the light source or the lumen output. Working at an executive desk for extended hours calls for a fairly bright light source ranging from 250 lumens to 2000 lumens so that you do not suffer from eye strain or fatigue.
2. Another point to remember is that the light source should be adjustable in terms of the height and angle of the light source. A diffuse rather than a point source light will be more pleasant on the eye and adds to the aesthetic feature as well. This calls for a fixture with extreme flexibility having articulated arms or a goose neck type desk lamp.
3. Another key point is the color temperature, measured in degrees Kelvin. The higher the Kelvin figures, the bluer or “cooler” the light will be. Filament bulbs give off a fairly warm light in the range of 3500 degrees Kelvin. CFL lights emit light in the range of 3500 to 6500 degrees Kelvin, from warm to cool daylight. Similarly, the newer fashion and more modern LED lights give off light in this color temperature range. Choose one with which you are comfortable.
4. While filament bulbs and LEDs do not give off ultra violet radiation, some types of CFL based lamps are susceptible to giving off UV radiation so check before making a final decision on buying a desk lamp. You will be using it for years and your eyes are sensitive to damage due to UV radiation so be careful.
5. Still another point to note is the power consumption. Modern executive desk lamp fixtures are fitted with low power consuming lamps that give off high lumen output, with a natural color shade. For example, a lamp that consumes 30 watts of electricity may give light output equivalent to that of a 150-watt lamp. LED based lamps are reputed to be the most energy efficient, environmentally friendly, have the highest flexibility and last the longest while filament bulbs are at the other end of the scale. The general preference today is for CFL based lamps but the trend is in the direction of LED based lighting fixtures.
Technical apart, today the aesthetics also play a vital role. Not just any type of executive desk lamp will serve the purpose. The entire fixture has to match the interior of the executive’s cabin and harmonize with his desk. For example, an antique design desk lamp would complement a retro and antique desk. A number of manufacturers offer a variety of styles in these desk lamps. Therefore, while there is a vast choice, it can also get confusing but knowing the right points to look for would make the selection process easier and give you best value for money, comfort and enhanced productivity.
