Big health problems for men
There are many health problems that are shared between men and women, such as cardiovascular disease and some cancers. There are, of course, diseases particularly specific to men, like testicular problems, prostate cancer and impotence.
Despite men’s health problems, we tend to bury our heads in the sand and ignore the problem. Men are much less likely to visit a GP for advice than a woman, and less likely to discuss an emotional issue.
Heart disease including strokes and heart attacks, are the UK’s most common form of death. Men are affected much earlier in life than women, and are more likely to suffer fatally up to the age of 75. In order to eradicate these possibilities, it is advisable to quit smoking and to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Alcohol too, is a big problem affecting the health of men in this county. According to information from government, over one third of men drink more than the recommended level of alcohol. According to the medical profession, the limits for men are set at three to four units of alcohol every day. Obviously this will be dependant of some variable like the age and height of the individuals. Figures recently released show an increase of 15% on last year for the number of men using alcohol and drug treatment centres.
Approximately 34,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, a rise of 300% over the past 30 years. Men under the age of 50 are less likely to be at risk, as most cases are reported in men over 60. The choice of treatment varies with many different factors, including general health and age. Other factors to consider may include the advancement fo the cancer and possible side-effects of the treatment. National Health treatment is fairly normal, but also there is an expanding market in the private sector. Private hospitals have reportedly seen an increase of 15% on the previous year.
