Can I use fresh wood chips froma chipper for mulch?
My grandfather told me it drains nutrients from the soil to decompose the wood.
Well, as a thin layer(maybe 3-4″) you are not building up the heat for “composting”. Decomposition will be much slower, and I’m guessing that it wont tie up the Nitrogen too much. You will want to be aware of what kind of wood chips you use and the effects of each (ie: almost nothing will grow near Black walnut. Quercic acid from oak can knock out a few things, pine can be very acid and if you are chipping old “lumber” be sure its not treated. Don’t put any mulch up to the trunks of shrubs or trees, you can set up a situation that encourages crown rot rot. After all is said and done, I’d sooner use compost (that contains those wood chips) as mulch.
