If you are one of those people who suffer from delayed sleep-phase syndrome, a chronic disorder involving the timing of sleep in which sufferers fall asleep a few hours after midnight and then have difficulty waking up in the morning, then an alarm clock radio that provides light therapy can help you. Light therapy involves exposing DSPS sufferers to specially timed lights in order to adjust their circadian rhythms. This form of therapy has also been proved to be useful for workers adjusting to night shifts as well as travelers suffering from jet lag, as well as improving peoples’ general well-being. How does the HF3480 Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock work? When you set the alarm, its wake-up light gradually begins filling your room with light in order to prepare your body for awakening. It is intended to mimic the effect of the rising sun, since our eyes are more sensitive to light in the early morning hours. Hence, by the time you have set the alarm, the light is at its brightest. And you can choose from 20 brightness levels – up to a maximum of 300 lux – so you can find a light intensity with which you feel the most comfortable. The light reaches your eyes even through your closed eyelids, activating your energy hormones and readying your body to wake up.
You can also set the Wake-Up Light to accompany the gradually strengthening light with pleasurable natural sounds or music from your favorite FM station. The Wake-Up light comes programmed with four natural wake-up sounds (including birds, African jungle and wind chimes) as well as a digital FM receiver. You can also wake up to your favorite songs or sounds downloaded from the Internet by inserting a memory stick in the USB port (the stick is not included with the clock); Philips offers many downloadable sounds on its light therapy site. Set the desired volume level before you go to sleep and then it will start to play at the scheduled wake-up time, starting softly and then gradually increasing in volume until it reaches the selected level. And the wake-up light saves you money on your energy bills by using an energy-saving bulb that consumes 24% less electricity vs. regular light bulbs.
On the other hand, if you’re having trouble sleeping, you can use the Dusk Simulator function of the wake-up light. The dusk simulator works in the opposite way from the wake-up function: you are gradually lulled to sleep by slowly decreasing light and sound levels designed to mimic the falling of dusk. You can choose how long the dusk simulation will last with settings ranging from 15 minutes to two hours, after which the light and sound will shut off. Of course, you can also use the alarm function to wake you up later.
