Which Mini Fridge Is Best For The Dorm Room?
A mini fridge is usually small and light enough for you to take from place to place without to much fuss, easy to locate in the corner of a room and cheap on running costs. Most mini refrigerators range in size from 3.6 cu ft through to truly portable six pack refrigerators. Choosing a model that will be suitable will be entirely down to what you want to store and how much flexibility you want from the fridge.
If you are after something that can be used for years to come no matter where you live you might consider a larger size mini fridge. These fridges run from 1.7 cu ft through to 3.6 cu ft, look like a standard refrigerator but are just smaller. The 1.7′s will usually have a single interior shelf, no crisper and an ice box that is only good for making ice cubes but will weigh in at about 40 pounds so as easy to place and can store bottles and groceries and in latter years can become an overflow fridge. Larger sizes will have additional storage shelves but ice boxes remain small and pretty useless for everything but making ice cubes. You can often find lockable small refrigerators in these size bands for security, the best selling small compact fridge at the moment is the Haier HNSB02 1.7 cu ft mini fridge costing around $70.
If you are looking to keep a few cans chilled, or want something that can double up as a car fridge then a truly portable fridge might be the best option for you. These are usually plastic cased with a carry handle, do not have any ice box or interior shelves and are usually good to keep a six pack of soda cans cool although you can get larger models in the same style. These fridges are really desk top fridges and have limited long term use but are good for keeping a few cans cool on a journey or whilst sitting at your desk. The best selling portable mini fridge on the market right now is the Koolatron KWC 4 6 pack fridge available for about $40 from Amazon.
Before you choose which type of mini fridge to opt for consider what you are going to use it for and how flexible and long lasting you want the fridge to be. The portables, due to their size just aren’t as flexible as a 1.7 cu ft mini fridge might be but then maybe you just want a fridge that is good for the desk or car.
