Guide to Purchasing a Modern Desk
If you are wanting to purchase a modern desk, there are several factors you should consider before making a purchase. Some of the things you should be thinking about are what the primary use of the desk will be, your style preferences, and your budget.
One of the most common uses of modern desks are for desktop and laptop computers. Sometimes this means the desks have special features most appropriate for use with computers. Some examples of these features are a slide-out keyboard tray, a desktop tower shelf below the main working surface, additional lower shelves suitable to store power strips and printers, and cable management clips or holes. Other considerations for computer usage are the working surface height, and the clearance between the bottom of the working surface and where your legs will be when you sit in a chair at the desk. Additional non-computer specific features you may want depending on your needs are a hutch to store paper documents and office supplies, front drawers to keep supplies and documents out of site, or an attached filing cabinet for increased paper document storage.
You will also want to give some thought to your style preferences. This includes what materials the desk is made out of, as well as the shape and lines of the design. For a contemporary look, materials such as painted steel, brushed aluminum, glass tops, and plastic accents are common. In shape and style, the modern desk commonly has all straight lines and surfaces, or straight lines mixed with a few curved components such as the legs, or the working surface. Desks made entirely of wood can also have modern designs, but are typically still primarily traditional in design. For example, the writing desk is one of the more traditional types of desks built of wood and used for writing letters, and have evolved to be used for laptop computers in recent years which make it a good choice.
Being pleased with how your desk looks, especially when you keep it clean, can have a positive effect on your enjoyment and productivity levels while you are working at the desk. Another thing to consider is your budget and how it relates to your needs. If you will be spending full days working at your desk, it makes sense to buy a higher quality desk that can last for several years and be as comfortable as possible. Higher quality desks will generally be constructed out of more durable and nicer materials, and have superior fit and finish, and are more expensive. If you find your budget will not buy a new desk of the quality you actually need, consider some alternatives such as buying a used desk from local individuals on online classified sites, or used furniture stores.
