A basic run through to pianos and keyboards
When most of us think about a piano, we think of a concert pianist playing a grand piano, but there are two or three types of piano, here we will discuss them, from the grand piano, to the upright piano to the digital keyboard.
First item on the list is the grand piano itself. Its huge size is what allows it to acheive its sound, as the longer strings help reduce the lower frequencies and harmonics. Smaller piano’s, such as the baby grand piano and the boudoir grand piano will use thicker strings to keep the tension, which allows for clarity in the sound, as string tension would be lowered using the concert grand piano’s string, making it sound muddy and possibly unplayable. The sizes of the grand piano range from 2-3 meteres for a concert piano, to 1-2 meteres for a boudoir grand piano to the baby grand piano, which is just slightly smaller than the boudoir.
The ‘upright’ piano is usually what you’ll find in a majority of the homes that have pianos. With its frame and strings horizontally housed inside the piano, the upright piano is slightly smaller than a grand piano, but can still be 45 inches or taller.
Mistaken all too often as another keyboard is the electric piano, which as a piano has the foot pedals which a piano has to control frequencies and pitch which the keyboard doesnt. But they honestly dont sound as good as an acoustic piano, even with the ‘wonders of modern technology’.
And as for those digital keyboards…..
Much easier to carry around, smaller and cheaper than a piano, the keyboard will be the nearest thing most of us will come towards owning a piano. The digital technology inside allows a keyboard to carry sounds from the grand piano, to the humours sound of a steel drum to the spookiness of a church organ.
